Build a pond

To attract wild aquatic fauna to your water garden, think about it round shape. Choose a well-lit location for it, but without excess. Before digging the ground, draw a detailed plan with all the important elements: shape, orientation, size, depth of staged areas for the establishment of vegetation.

From this plan you will decide the waterproof coating : flexible (tarpaulin), rigid (preformed base), hard (concrete) or in natural materials (clay, marl). Cover this impermeable bottom with a substrate of sand, gravel and a layer of clay or poor soil. Your container is ready! Wait for the rain or fill it gently with tap water, the chlorine evaporates quickly.

Native plants

The best way to get a living pond is to introduce native aquatic plants. There are about twenty varieties to be adapted according to the size of the pool. If it is small, place on its banks scattered rush, water mint (in a stoneware pot to contain it) and swamp iris. In open water, make way for pondweed swimming, to the aquatic buttercup and at yellow water lily. Plants that are easy to set up: weight them with a ball of clay or marl and throw them in the desired places.

Arrange the surroundings of your pond with stones, a small band of flower meadow and, if possible, shrub plantations. This space will shelter insects that like to perch around water.

Many hosts

As soon as the plants are implanted, dragonflies, beetles, gerris and other insects ponds and ponds will come to colonize your pond. The amphibians will arrive later.

No need for filters or pumps to maintain a pond, plants oxygenate the environment. Just watch it carefully for the first few years to avoid invasion by aquatic vegetation, cloudy water or the proliferation of filamentous algae.

After a few years, a balance will be established between the water, the vegetation and the animals. Your water garden will then offer you a show every day different.
